Jack the Ripper’s Knickers

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Deep in Jack the Ripper territory just behind Bishopsgate Police Station lies a dark secret.  Whitechapel is legendary for the murders committed by one of the first serial killers to gain notoriety.  Nowadays an altogether different cereal is found in the back alleys, and the only murder is evidenced by an occasional squealing lobster.

The back alley known as Widegate Street is where I found Sri Thong, a Thai restaurant with a name that brings back haunting memories of that famous and heinous picture of Peter Stringfellow on the beach.

Online Restaurant Reviews

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I normally follow Jeff Nolan for his views on enterprise software but this post caught my eye in relation to restaurant reviews.

An advert is only going to make me aware of a restaurant.  The next step is to find out what common customers think.  I don’t trust the reviews on Top Table and similar “guide” sites because it is too easy for them to be rigged.

Why don’t more people (especially in the UK) blog about their dining experiences?

If you click on the “Food” link under Categories on my home page you can see all the reviews I have done so far and there are lots more to come.

So come on everyone – let’s get busy!  Anyone who knows of any good blogs in this regard, please let me know and I will publicise them on this site.

TK Massimo

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

My day job took me to the City and after a morning of extreme hard work, a lunchtime visit to TKs on Lovat Lane.

Paul Hacker took me so I figured we might be there all afternoon.

An English Gent-in-the-Strand

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Breakfast is the new lunch?  Well if you listen to the critics, it seems that they are falling over themselves to review the “breakfast experience”.

I like breakfast.  My favourite breakfast ever is bacon with poached eggs, washed down by Earl Grey tea.

So in my search for a great English breakfast in London I tried to book the Wolseley only to find no space at the inn – not even for a celebrity like me!

So we plumped for Simpsons-in-the-Strand which has been serving Londoners English breakfasts since before my forefathers’ forefathers slaughtered their first pig.

My Last Supper

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

“Put a Yorkshireman in charge of an Italian restaurant???” I said.  “Next, you will be telling me a Swede is being appointed as England Football coach!”

So it came to pass that my predictions for the year 2001 were (as ever) way off the mark, since Martin Pickles bought the Flying Pizza in Leeds and……….well let’s not discuss the other appointment.

Old Amalfi Rocks!

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

Southampton Row is a funny old street.  Well funny yes, but mostly old.  It looks like it is stuck in a time warp from the 1960’s and 70’s.

However, there are one or two secret places I know where you can find food amongst the best value in London.  One of them is Old Amalfi.  An unremarkable establishment with tacky decor and no expense wasted on fine table linen or other unimportant items.

However, the food is terrific!

Old Amalfi at dusk - hey I’m a drinker not a photographer!

Browns, Always The Scene in Town

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

There isn’t much of a theatre scene in Leeds but what there is, is top notch.  We are privileged to know one of the cast of Opera North (although he never gets us tickets any more).  Leeds Grand Theatre is surely the best theatre outside London for architecture and acoustics (especially since the recent improvements).  The West Yorkshire Playhouse is also pretty good for a modern theatre and puts on some interesting modern pieces.

So where to dine before the show then?

Evuna – Tapas Bar or Wine Shop?

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Exactly how many quarters has Manchester got?  Can a city have more than four?  I hear tell in the press of the latest campaign to create an “Irish Quarter” which is bringing England’s second city to the point of fractional incongruence.

Personally, I like the Spanish quarter and one of my fave tapas places is on Deansgate two forward rolls from the new Beetham Tower – Evuna.

Did you know that the Beetham Tower at 47 floors is the highest residential building in Europe.  Has anyone told the residents on floor 36 that the fire brigade can only reach the fourth floor?  Food for thought!

Sharp Practice at Livebait

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Oh dear, I am going to sound like AA Gill, (although nowhere near as pretentious obviously, or well educated for that matter).

If there is one thing that makes my blood boil in a restaurant it is when they try to get two tips out of me.  We’ve all seen the drill, you get a long bill with a very discreet line at the bottom adding 10% or 12.5% service.  Then you get presented with the Chip and PIN terminal where the waiter invites you to “add a service charge”.

This is what happened to me when I visited Livebait in Manchester.

Simply Heathcoates – Simply Awful!

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Have you ever seen (Dr???) Gillian McKeith on “You Are What You Eat” on Channel 4 here in the UK?

She is frequently seen picking up a slice of white bread, then screwing it into a disgusting “gob” of snowball proportions and then throwing it across the room.  It makes you think just how bad white bread really is. But this is exactly how Simply Heathcotes (Manchester) served my Yorkshire pudding on Mothers’ Day 2007.  Only it was colder.
