Confessions from EWBC 2008

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Last year’s European Wine Bloggers Conference was a hoot. Erm, I mean a serious and considered look at the online wine world where ideas were floated, issues were shared, problems were halved, wine was consumed, and some people even got drunk.

As you can see from my eyes, this VinusTV video was filmed the morning after a huuuuuuge tasting where I sipped, but swallowed copiously.

If you write a wine blog, or have an interest on online wine affairs, I strongly recommend that you attend EWBC 2009 in Lisbon, 30 October.  Hopefully you will find me in better shape to speak with you.

Cono Sur Pinot Noir 2008

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

I’ve got my comeuppance for slagging off Mark Hughes.  Man City announced that the UEFA Cup quarter final home leg would be a “reward for the fans” and tickets were priced at only £5 so “ordinary fans” could come and watch.  I am obviously not an ordinary fan since, despite numerous calls to the ticket office (engaged tone) the match is sold out and I have to watch on some backwater internet channel.  Shame – I am in Manchester on 16 April when the town turns into a Hamburger for a night.

So perhaps I should be more complimentary about people I have never met.

Everyone knows that it is impossible to mass produce and mass market a decent wine – especially a Pinot Noir.  Trouble is, nobody told Alfred Hurtado.  His Chilean Cono Sur brand is taking over the world and rightly so.

Burgundy? New Zealand? On yer bike!

Hughes’ look says it all

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

So Man City’s UEFA dream survives after clinging by the loosest of threads for 90 minutes plus extra time and penalties.

I never supported the appointment of Mark Hughes.  However, I have held my tongue whilst others have defended him.  Apologists are fine, but with the budget he has, I think the fans deserve more.

A wine (nearly) as old as me

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I was at Sam’s Chop House in Manchester earlier this week.  Pat and Martin were kind enough to chip in and buy me a decent bottle of wine in memory of my birthday.  One from the year of my birth and reduced by an impressive £50 from the normal price.

Riojanas Monte Real Reserva 1964 had a dodgy cork, took an age to decant and was served too warm for me (about 23 degrees – I would serve at 18).  But it is probably the oldest wine I have ever drunk, so I was intrigued.

Monte Real, my part in its victory....

My sassenach sun shines in Glasgow

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

My own sun in Glasgow - just as well - it's minus 4!

I wonder what went through Claudio’s mind when I asked how warm the wine was.  I reached out my hand to touch the bottle.  Claudio winced.  Another stupid and ignorant Englishman?  Even worse than an ignorant Scotsman.  I grinned.  The bottle was cool.  Claudio nodded approvingly.  He had served the Primitivo Da Castello di Puglia at the recommended 16-18 degrees.  Probably even cooler actually, which suited the wine rather well.  Sweet flavours of cherries, cherry lips and bubble gum collided with the not unexpected tannic youth of the Italian stallion.

Snow business

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

On a day when a small flurry of snow brought chaos to most of the UK, and notably the South East, one has to look for small pleasures.  My amuse-bouche du jour arrived in the form of a quote from our capital’s Lord Mayor.  Not one red (or bendy) bus was used in anger today.

Snow way! Weigh hey!

Parodying British Rail excuses from days of yore (when us Northerners dug ourselves out of a snow drift most Januaries just to escape our beds) and sporting a cheeky smirk, Boris Johnson reflected on how well Londoners had faced up to the snow.  “This is the right kind of snow, it’s just the wrong kind of quantities”.

Ever said that about a bottle of wine – red or bendy?

Mr Blobby does sit ups

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

One of the advantages of detoxifying ones body is the opportunity to lose weight.

The Xmas festivities somehow adversely affected the accuracy of my bathroom scales causing a mean error of plus 6 lbs.

Happily, rigorous exercise, sensible eating, and abstinence means I am now below last year’s weight already.  I am not one to rest on my laurels but it is time for a treat.  A certain cheeky little Pinot Noir has my name on it for this evening.  YUM!

Stonking January wine bargains

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

To pass the time during my New Year detox, I have been hoovering up wine bargains to stock up for the year ahead and to get my taste buds flowering in anticipation.

Two bargains stand out from the crowd, one from Costco, one from the Wine Society.  One Champagne, the other red wine but from a relatively close starting point.

Freebie-jeebies. Nice glasses!

Mystic Meg needed for EWBC2009

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Apparently I am a wine blogger.  I know this because I was invited to (and attended) the European Wine Bloggers’ Conference 2008 in La Rioja.

The organisers are canvassing for candidates to attend the 2009 event “in mid June in Italy”.  Not very precise, but then again in these credit crunched times I don’t blame them for trying to assess likely interest before committing to the cream cracker budget.

If you are interested, email Rob, Ryan and Gabriella at contact@wineblogger.info and let them know who you are.  If it lives up to half the value, fun and fuzzy memories of the 2008 event it is one not to be missed.

If you can also predict when and where it will be, can you let me know.
