Hunter’s Sauvignon Blanc 2006
As I write this, I am listening to BBC6 Music. It’s a digital radio station that I am tuned in to through my TV. My TV is a Sony Bravia 26″ LCD. I’ve never seen worse software on a digital TV. It is so poor I am thinking of buying a Sky box just to get usable software (but I am not thinking of buying a new TV by the way, or subscribing to Sky for that matter).
Back to the music though. BBC6 has a sort of (almost certainly deliberate) Wayne’s World feel. A bit rough around the edges. Actually the music is excellent. I’ve just heard In a Rut by The Ruts, La Isla Bonita by Madonna, a live version of The Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Woman, Take Her Back by the Pigeon Detectives (who seem to be a carbon copy of the Arctic Monkeys actually), and, right now,  Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song – a CLASSIC. But the DJ is hopeless. George Lamb is taking the amateur street feel to beyond a tolerable limit – amateur rubbish. But hey I’m sure he is learning, and will get better over time. And once again his taste in music is just great.
So I am proving that I am prepared to tolerate one poor ingredient for the greater good. Tonight’s wine is Hunter’s Sauvignon Blanc 2006 from the same case as Dog Point et al and it’s pretty good.
The overwhelming flavour is gooseberry - too much. A bit sharp. A bit too tart. But if you can see your way through the gooseberry, there is a much more subtle wine behind. Possibly the closest to Cloudy Bay I’ve tasted for a while. To be honest though, there are Pouilly Fumés and Sancerres at a similar price that would beat this one, because you don’t have to fight your way through the Ribes uva-crispa to get to the music. I guess you pays yer money and takes yer choice….
Hunter’s Sauvignon Blanc 2006 is available from the Wine Society at £9.95.

Sky box and usable software in the same sentence? Have you been drinking? Why don’t you use t’internet? You can listen to BBC6 online in a choice of two hideous proprietary formats, with Windows Media being the lesser of the two evils.
As for gooseberries, we have two bushes full of the dastardly things and neither man nor beast will touch them. They stay on the bush every year until they shrivel up and disappear in the depths of winter, and rightly so.
Sony is a dirty word in my book as well, but I thought the Hula Hoops were a nice touch.

[…] have just re-tried Hunters Sauvignon Blanc 2006. I liked it last time but I claimed there was too much gooseberry . Well, this time I still got the gooseberry but so many more complex flavours like peaches, […]
